Watch Those Weeds!

I have this large flower bed in my front yard that has been neglected for quite some time, it seems other things have just taken precedence in my life! But every day I pull into my driveway it’s an eyesore to me — so one day I got my boys out there and we can began to pull weeds.  With several of us doing it, it didn’t take us too long. Then I went and bought some perennials, that I wouldn’t have to mess with that much, in hopes that they would grow without a lot of maintenance.

There I’m done…so I thought!  But little by little, I began to see small weeds creeping up again through the bed. I go back out and begin pulling them out again! But then a good rain comes, a week or so goes by and my flowerbeds are covered in weeds again!

While out there this morning surveying the weeds, it reminds me of how our spiritual lives are a lot like those weeds - the first problem is I didn’t properly prepare the soil to prevent other weeds from getting in. The second problem is, I have not been maintaining or “continuing” to stay on top of the problem — so little by little, day by day the weeds begin to take over.

Prevention. Safeguarding. Maintaining. Continuing. These are all words that come to mind.

There may be places in your life right now that you know need correcting, be it worry, fear, lust, poverty-mindset, whatever it may be that you are currently struggling in. The key to freedom is getting in God’s Word about that particular situation and allowing it to illuminate and reveal those places that you need freedom in.

Hebrews 11:6 in the Amplified says, “For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

I encourage you to read that again, but slowly, word by word comprehending what the Word does. Wow! That’s powerful!

Let the Word in the deepest parts of your nature…allow it to uproot wrong mindsets and ways of thinking.

The second point I want to make is “continuing.”  Just like weeds, if not properly maintained on an ongoing and continual basis we can get off track.  We can let things creep in, if we’re not maintaining watch over our spirit.

It’s DAILY staying in the Word.

If I want to keep my flowerbeds beautiful, then I must continually maintain it — actively watching over and preventing the little weeds from turning into even bigger weeds that choke out the beauty of what I’ve planted.

Jesus said in John 8:31, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed…”

CONTINUE - persist in an activity or process. Ongoing, persistent, relentless, unceasing.

Can you say that you have been CONTINUING in the Word? Or is it just when a crisis hits (weeds have taken over) that you begin to hurry and find a scripture to “fix” the problem?

To continue, is to NEVER stop.

See your spirit man as a flowerbed that you must maintain on a daily basis. Watching over it so no weeds begin to quickly take over.

You can’t take shortcuts or try quick fixes. It’s “continuing” day after day after day in God’s way and in His Word.

John 15:4 says, Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.”

When you abide, dwell, reside in Him that’s where your peace comes from, your wisdom comes from —every need you have in your life is found by ABIDING IN HIM!

I encourage you today to continue to watch over your spiritual flowerbed so the weeds don’t take over!
