Have you ever said to yourself, “OK, the first thing I will do every morning, will be to read my Bible and pray.” And you really, really wanted to do that, but you woke up and automatically start checking your emails, then looked on Facebook (which consumed an hour), then you get hungry and need something to eat real quick, but wait, there’s that load of laundry that needs to get in the washer before you can sit down. Just about the time you settle down in your cozy place with your cup of coffee in hand, you get a phone call from a long winded friend. Before you realize it, your morning is gone...So much for giving God the first part of your day in prayer. It’s happened to me, more times then I would like to admit.
Distractions are all around us, (and I’m not even talking about the bad ones) to keep us undisciplined and off focus in our relationship with God. We say He is first in our lives, but how many hours are spent scrolling our newsfeed, rather than spending quality time in prayer and reading our Bibles? Ouch, that hurts! But like I said, there are days I’m just as guilty.
At times our priorities have gotten off balance and before you know it, we’ve put other things before God. We wouldn’t dare let little Johnny miss his baseball practice 4 nights a week, or skip a book club night with the girls, and we never forget to watch our favorite TV program, do we? You know, you can easily identify where a person is in their life, by what they most frequently talk about. The sports fan, will constantly discuss their favorite team. The girl in love will gush about her boyfriend. The Pinterest addict will talk about their latest find. None of these things are wrong in and of themselves, but where does time with God fit into our daily lives? Has He become a side note to all the other things in life?
Let’s define “time with God.” To some it’s just a religious duty to say a quick prayer, “Bless my day, bless my kids. Amen.” Then grab the Bible and let it fall open to any page, find a verse, read it, and close the Book. Spending time with God is nothing like that! It’s so much deeper and should be given the HIGHEST priority in your life. It doesn’t have to be hours and hours everyday in deep meditation, it’s just getting quiet before Him for however long you need to and listening. It’s shutting out the rest of the world and all you must get done that day and putting your complete attention on Him. Hope can come in those quiet times. Peace can come. Direction can come. Joy can come. It’s reading His Word and finding that one scripture, that’s exactly what you need for that very moment in your life - which will sustain you throughout the day. It’s spiritual food that keeps you going when you feel like you cannot take another step. Time with God is a place of comfort that no other human being could ever give you. It’s more refreshing than jumping in a pool on the hottest day of the year! God’s Word is never boring to read when you come at it with a desire and hunger to know Him deeper than you ever have. There have been times in my life that I read my Bible just because it was the thing I needed to do and my religious obligation, and as a result, I got absolutely nothing out of it. But now I read my Bible because I’m on a quest to truly KNOW HIM. His Words keep me and sustain me in the hardest times AND in the peaceful times of life.
I challenge you today to let the words of the Apostle Paul become your goal, just as they have become mine...
“For my determined purpose is that I may know Him, that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly.” Philippians 3:10 (Amplified)
Turn the tv off, put your phone on silent, and make God your highest priority today!
